Business Administration

The accounting department is vital to the overall success of the dealership. I have heard from managers in other departments that the accounting office doesn’t produce any gross profit so why do they get so much credit or recognition. While I agree that the accounting department does not run the dealership, I also understand that it is crucial in every department’s success.  This department cannot be taken lightly. It is responsible to compile all the sales and gross profits from all departments as well as all expenses. They have to pay all expenses, they are in charge of paying all employees including any benefits, they handle all title work, they are in charge of paying and accounting for all taxes, and they usually collect all receivables. All of their responsibilities may not produce gross profit, they can without a doubt cost the dealership plenty if not done properly and on time. One huge responsibility is keeping up with paying floorplan expenses. I have seen the demise of a dealership by not handling this one function properly and on time according to the Banks criteria. Some of our work at Blaylock Consulting Group involves dealerships that get out of trust with their floorplan lender. Everything this department does if not done properly can cost the dealership profit dollars, so it is imperative to have it running efficiency. This requires ongoing training and sound processes for every employee.

“If a dealer really wants to take sales to the next level and I have never met one yet that doesn’t, a process throughout the sales department that everyone is trained on and adheres to is paramount”
